Development Social Development Master Plan for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase II
Challenge
The challenge was to assist community members in neighbouring villages affected directly and indirectly by constructing the 38km tunnel that will be transferring water from the Polihali Reservoir to the Katse Reservoir.
Solution
Bigen’s mandate is to ensure that the developed master plan uplifts communities in a way that is socially and economically beneficial.
The proposed programmes will be developed to ensure long-term sustainable development within the communities long after the project’s lifecycle. The project is aligned with Bigen’s vision of “doing good while doing business” because it looks beyond delivering traditional infrastructure and aims to translate projects into socio-economic value.
Services
The services provided included extensive community and stakeholder engagement, baseline assessment and designing social and economic initiatives—the design of a master plan aims to guide future growth and development.
SED impact
The project is expected to generate increased employment opportunities, skills development, regional spending, improved road infrastructure and associated environment and social programmes.
