Projects
Lonmin Integrated Water Conservation & Demand Management
Challenge
Mining operations often require high volumes of water. Many times, these mines are in areas where water is not readily available or in short supply. In such instances, mines are always looking for mechanisms to manage their water usage more efficiently and ultimately reduce as far as possible.
Solution
This project included the development of the water balance and identification and conceptual design of water conservation and demand management initiatives.
It included boreholes in old open cast pits, transfer pipelines, storage reservoirs, greywater, and potable water treatment works.
The dynamic water balance model proved that the current Rand Water potable use could be reduced by as much as 50% and the environmental spills by 60%.
SED Impact
Environmental protection and reduction of pollution to surrounding areas and water systems through water re-use.
